Springfield Masonic Community’s Walk to Wellness Experience

Springfield Masonic Community, a Masterpiece Living partner community in Springfield, Ohio, shares their story about this year`s Walk to Wellness:

“Our goal was to walk from Chicago to Los Angeles on Route 66 for a total of 2,448 miles. We accomplished three times that! We began with a kickoff on May 1 with a virtual stop at the Navy Pier, with 208 team members and residents signing up initially. Each week we celebrated with a different stop on Route 66. Our first destination was St. Louis, with a themed lunch of ribs. Stop two was Oklahoma City, with a visit to the cowboy museum and a resident/team member chili cook-off. Stop three was Seligman, AZ with a visit to the Road Kill Cafe. During lunch the menu was changed to mimic the Cafe`s menu, and an Elvis impersonator entertained the crowd. Our final stop was the Grauman`s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.

“During May we also offered walking groups led by different team members six days a week. These groups were quite popular among team members and residents. They allowed for social and spiritual enrichment (many walks were held outdoors), as well as physical exercise.¬†Once we reached LA (after just 10 days!), we decided we would walk back to our campus in Springfield, OH, and even that goal was exceeded. As part of our celebration for reaching our destination (a few times), participants put their handprints in a cement stepping stone, which will have a name plate and total miles walked attached to it.

“It was amazing to see how surprised so many of the residents were to see their total miles add up. Many had said at sign-up that they weren`t sure if they should do it because they do not walk very far normally. There has already been talk about our goals for next year, and how much more we need to challenge ourselves. Maybe even walking around the world in 80 days!”
