Sleep Is Non-Negotiable!
Sleep Is Non-Negotiable!
By: Dr. Roger Landry, MD, MPH
Did you know that an estimated 40% of the people in the US alone are not getting enough sleep? Lack of sleep has been linked to a weakened immune system, high blood pressure, depression, heart disease, poor memory, Type 2 diabetes and unnaturally speeding up the aging process. It is also a major cause of accident-related injuries. Why is sleep so critical? It is in the NREM (non-rapid eye movement) stage where our bodies go into repair – growing new tissue, building bones and muscles, and enhancing our immune system. When we sleep, our brains act like a Hoover vacuum, sweeping out nonessential bits of information that we’ve collected during the day to make our minds more efficient. Instead of looking at sleep as a hindrance, keeping you from getting more done, think of to as a necessary exercise. Make sleep non-negotiable!
